Outline the life cycle of Schistosomiasis
SLIDE
What happens following exposure to Schistosomiasis ?
Cercarial dermatitis
Exposure to cercariae from animal or bird schistosomes
Requires pre-sensitisation
Allergic-type reaction
What is the key feature of the immune response to Schistosomiasis ?
Granuloma formation
Eggs become organised in granulomas
Repeated insults and tissue repair leads to fibrosis and organ damage
(liver or bladder )
What occurs in hepato-intestinal schistosomiasis ?
The eggs are pushed through the capillaries into the lumen of the intestines.
This can lead to cirrhosis and long term damage
Enlargement of liver and spleen
