Mechanisms of viral infection and pathogenesis Flashcards
What is the general patterns of viral infection ?
Acute infection
This is when we are infected, has a limited life span ,disease symptoms tend to correspond to the peak
What are some examples of acute infections ?
Measles
Common cold
Ebola
Small pox
What are chronic infections?
The course of the viral infection lasts much longer
Latent reactivating infection
-Symptoms , then resolved Virina and it causes waves
Persistent infection
What are some examples of latent/reactivating infections ?
Human herpes viruses
Life long infection ,controlled by immunity
What does Herpes cause in humans ?
In children :
Primary gingivostomatitis
In adults :
Cold sore
Outline the course of herpes simplex /VZV latency
SLIDE
What are persistence infections ?
Persistence in the precense of an active immune response
HIV-Retrovirus
HCV-flavivirus
Measles -Causes acute infection , but virus shed for several weeks after acute infection and rare encephalitis cases years after infection
What are some examples of persistant infections ?
Congenital Rubella
If infected in utero, virus is seen as self , babay is born immunotolerant and virus will continue to replicate and cause damaged in neonatal tissues)
What is congenital rubella ?
SLIDE
