Adaptive immunity Flashcards
Define adaptive immunity
Immunity that occurs after exposure to an antigen either from a pathogen or a vaccination. This part of the immune system is activated when the innate immune response is insufficient to control an infection.
What are the three aspects of the adaptive immune system which are different to the innate response
Rapidity
Potency
Specificity
What is anamnestic response ?
This means recognises the pathogen and doesnt forget it .
Has memory
What are the important parts of having an adaptive immune response ?
Provides protection from and defence against pathogens
Malignancy surveillance Damage healing (tissue repair) and repair
The same pathogens tend to come back
Some pathogens dont actually leave
What can Low lymphocytes lead to
Low CD$ T-lymphocyte counts can cause opportunistic infections
Identify some lymphocytes
B cells
T cells
NK cells
