Schistosoma Mansoni Features

A

S. mansoni (Africa + parts of South America, the Caribbean and the Middle East while S. japonicum is endemic in China, Indonesia and parts of the Philippines.

  1. Egg Morphology: In stool microscopy examination, S. mansoni eggs appear ovoid with a lateral spine whereas S. japonicum eggs are round with a small rudimentary spine which may not be visible.
  2. Host Snail Species: The intermediate host snail species differ between the two; Biomphalaria spp for S. mansoni and Oncomelania spp for S.japonicum.
