Passage 8 Flashcards
hic difficultatibus duae res erant subsidio,
Two things were a source of help in these difficulties:
, scientia atque usus militum,
: the knowledge and experience of the soldiers,
, because, having been trained in previous battles, they were able to suggest themselves what ought to be done, no less conveniently than to be taught by others;
; and because Caesar had forbidden his individual commanders to depart from their work and their respective legions unless the camp had been fortified.
. These men, on account of the closeness and speed of the enemy, were awaiting no command now from Caesar, but were performing what (duties) seemed right for themselves.
