Parts of the Leaf Flashcards
Cuticle
waxy coating that protects the leaf from water loss and harmful substances
Epidermis
transparent to allow light to pass through to the underlying layer
serves as a protective barrier, helps retain water and prevent damage
Palisade cells/mesophyll
main cells for photosynthesis
vasular bundle (vein)
organizes the two transport tissues into the highways throughout the leaf
transports glucose and water around the leaf
What are the two transport tissues inside the vascular bundle?
Xylem and Phloem
Xylem
transports water + minerals from roots up to the leaves
Starts out alive then cells die, leaving the cell wall
Phloem
Transports sugar in the leaves to the rest of the plant (goes down)
Spongey mesophyll
Loosely packed with many moist air gaps, allows gas exchange via diffusion
Stomata
opening for gas exchange
CO2 in and O2 out
looses H2O as a by product
Guard cells
Regulates the size of the stomata to control H2O loss and CO2 intake
How does the guard cells open the stomata?
fill it with water to open (turgid)
How does the guard cells close the stomata?
empty of water to close (flaccid)
