Organelles Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Jelly like substance that supports all the organelles
Cell membrane
Encloses the cell contents
- made up of a phospholipid bilayer
Nucleus
Contains the DNA, directs cell activities
- the center of the cell is the nucleolus
Chromosomes
densely packed DNA, everyone has 46
Endoplasmic reticulum
A system of channels from the nucleus
- rough ER: has ribosomes on the walls, ribosomes are sed for protein
Golgi apparatus
Collects, packages, and distribute molecules
Lysosomes
Vesicles containing digestive enzymes
Ribosomes
The site of protein synthesis
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, converts glucose to ATP
Chloroplasts
Only found in plant cells, converts sunlight into energy (photosynthesis)
Unique qualities of a plant cell
Central vacuole for storage (water)
Cells wall (supports the cells so it doesn’t burst)
Unique qualities of an animal cell
No cell wall, only a cell membrane
- uses proteins for extra support
Has a centriole (used for cell division)
