Microscopes Flashcards
Microscopes must complete 3 tasks…
- Produce a magnified image of a specimen
- Separate the details in the image
- Render the details visible to the human eye of a camera
What is a simple microscope?
Light only passes through one lens
Ex. Magnifying glass
What is a compound microscope?
Light passes through specimen then through two or more lenses.
Why do we stain specimens?
Cells originally appear colourless, staining it helps to spot the different organelles
What is the formula to figure out total magnification?
Ocular lens x objective lens = total magnification
What is the formula to calculate the field of view of another lens?
Total magnification (1) x field of view (1) = total magnification (2) x field of view (2)
How to solve:
Total magnification (1) / total magnification (2) = y
Y x field of view (1) = field of view (2)
