Parts of the brain Flashcards
Frontal lobe
-Personality, descision making, concentration, planning and organising
-Damage can cause behaviour change and innapropriate behaviour
Parietal lobe
-Processes sensory information allowing us to interact w/ the world around us, touch and locate things
-Damage can lead to problems with recognising environments and faces
Occupital lobe
-Controls visual processing areas, allows us to process visual imagery facilitating vision, awareness of colours and shapes
-Damage can lead to problems with reading, identifying colours.
Temporal lobe
Processes language, smell and hearing, damage may impair memory of words and sounds.
Pons
Above the medulla, controls wakefulness and facial movements, connects upper and lower parts of the brain, relays messages from cortex to cerebellum
-Damage can cause permenent sleep state
Medulla
Controls autonomic functions like breathing, heart and blood vessel functions, swallowing, digestion-damage can be fatal as it can cause problems w/ functions essential for life
Cerebellum
Located behind the brainstem, 2 hemispheres, carries out actions ordered by the motor cortex-damage can cause imbalance, tremor and imprecise movements.
Spinal cord
-Spinal cord: Nervous tissue which extends from the brain and allows messages to be sent from the brain to the body and vice versa. Damage can lead to paralysis
Sulcus
-grooves/wrinkles in the brain
Fissure
Long narrow crack/deep sulcus
Gyrus
A ridge/fold on the brain surface
Lobes
Lobe-round, flat projecting part of the brain usually contains 2 or more parts divided by fissures.
