Glands and Hormones: Pituitary Gland Flashcards
Pituitary Gland: Function
Release tropic hormones which facilitate the release of other hormones-master gland controlling the release of hormones in the endocrine system
Hypothalamus Negative Feedback
Works with the hypothalamus to detect when there is enough of one hormone in circulation then inhibits the release of more hormones in a negative feedback system
Anterior Pituitary Gland
-Releases tropic hormones related to growth and reproduction including
-Growth Hormones
-Thyroid stimulating hormones
-ACTH
Prolactin
Folicule stimulating hormone
Lutenising Hormone
Posterior Pituitary Gland
Vasopresin and Oxytocin-Facilitates love, bonding and control of blood pressure and kidneys
Growth hormone
-Regulates growth and bone and muscle mass-anterior
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Controls the release of thyroid hormones-anterior
ACTH
-Releases steroid hormones from adrenal glands-anterior
Prolactin
-Milk production and hormone levels-Anterior
FSH
-Secretion of sexual and reproductive hormones-Anterior
Lutenising Hormone
-Stimulates release of tesosterone in men, oestrogen in women.-anterior
Vasopressin
Urine volume, blood volume and blood pressure-posterior
Oxytocin
Love hormone, sexual and romantic bonds-posterior
Anterior Pituitary Tissue
Made of glandular tissue
Posterior Pituitary Tissue
Made of neural tissue
