Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine System
System of communication throughout the body which maintains essential functions for survival, reproduction and homeostasis. Made up of a system of glands which release hormones which facilitate functions
Hormones
Chemical messengers released into the bloodstream from glands-
they then move from the capillaries and bind to receptors on target cells which trigger the specific change in a cell.
-Perform essential specialised functions by facilitating changes in the body
How do hormones facilitate changes in the body
they then move from the capillaries and bind to receptors on target cells which trigger the specific change in a cell.
-Perform essential specialised functions by facilitating changes in the body
Amine Hormones
Synthesised from amino acids-adrenaline
Peptide Hormones
Made up of long chains of amino acids-Insulin
Steroid Hormones
Made from cholestorol-absorbed through fat molecules in the cell wall
-Estrogen and Tesosterone
Glands
Organs which synthesise and release hormones into the bloodstream
