Neural transmission: Action potentials Flashcards
Action potential
Electrical impulse which conducts information along an axon, occurs when there is a change in the membrane potential.
Membrane Potential
Total amount of energy stored within a neuron-charge of the cell membrane
Resting potential
Charge difference across the membrane whilst a neuron is at rest, usually -70mV
Outside of a neuron charge
Positively charged
Inside of a neuron charge
Negatively charged
What needs to happen for an action potential to occur
Threshold of excitation must be reached (-60mV)
Threshold of excitation
Charge a neuron must reach for an action potential to occur (-60mV)
Depolarisation
When an action potential occurs the charge of the membrane potential increases and becomes positively charged (40mV)
Repolarisation
Membrane potential reduces to negative charge
