Parts of the Brain Flashcards
What does the pons do?
helps coordinate movement and control sleep
What does the cerebellum do?
coordinates voluntary movement and balance and supports learning and memories
What does the medulla do?
controls heartbeat and breathing
Includes the auditory areas, each receiving information primarily from the opposite ear.
Temporal Lobe
Involved in speaking and muscle movements and in making plans and judgements
Frontal lobe
Receives sensory input for touch and body position
Parietal Lobe
Includes areas that receive information from the visual fields
Occipital Lobe
ultimate control and information processing center
cerebral cortex
Axon fibers connecting the two cerebral hemispheres
corpus callosum
relays messages between lower brain centers and cerebral cortex
thalamus
Directs maintenance activities such as eating; helps govern the endocrine system; linked to emotion and reward
hypothalamus
master endocrine gland
pituitary gland
helps process explicit memories for storage
hippocampus
linked to emotion, aggression and fear
amygdala
