Parts of the Brain Flashcards
Cerebellum (hindbrain)
integrates signals and ensures output is smooth and coordinated
Medulla Oblongata (hindbrain)
controls automatic functions
Pons (hindbrain)
relay station, responsible for sleep, breathing, swallowing, taste, bladder control and balance
Inferior and Superior Calliculus (midbrain)
help process auditory and visual input
Substantia Niagra (midbrain)
contains neurons that communicate using dopamine to help coordinate voluntary movements
Brainstem (midbrain)
forms the physical support for the brain
Reticular Activating System (brainstem)
modulates alertness and arousal
Thalamus (forebrain)
relays sensory information and motor signals, regulates sleep and alertness
Hypothalamus (forebrain)
bridge between nervous and endocrine systems
Olfactory Bulb
involved in detecting odors
Hippocampus
consolidates short term memory into long term memory
Basal Ganglia
eye movements, voluntary movement, procedural and habitual learning
Limbic System
emotion, memory, and motivation
Amygdala
part of limbic system
episodic memory, attention and emotion
Nucleus Accumbens
part of limbic system
reward, motivation and learning
