Neurotransmitters Flashcards
Neurotransmitters
push the membrane potential difference in either direction
Excitatory
depolarize target neuron, make it more likely to send a signal
Inhibitory
hyper-polarize target neuron, make it less likely to send a signal
Acetylcholine
activates muscle contraction at neuromuscular junction, communicates signals between CSN and ANS
GABA
inhibitory
Glutamate
excitatory, most common
Dopamine
involved in reward pathway, mediates certain motor functions
Norepinephrine
acute stress response
Endorphins
suppress pain, produce euphoric response
Serotonin
regulates mood, appetite, sleep, and intestinal movement
Agonist
compound that activates a certain receptor causing a response
Antagonist
bind to a receptor but doesn’t cause a response
