Parts If The Eye/vision Flashcards
Cornea
Protective covering where light first enters the eye
Lens
Bends (refracts) light rays, focuses a flipped, inverted image onto the retina
Retina
A thin structure at back of eye that contains two types of receptor cells
Rods
Respond to black and white, low light more sensitive to motion
Cones
Respond to color, good for day time vision
Optic nerve
Carries visual information to the thalamus
Blind spot
A place where the optic nerve exits the eye, has no receptor cells, so no vision
Light waves
Electromagnetic waves that stimulate receptors in the eye
Intensity
Amount of energy per unit of time (brightness)
Wavelength
Distance between two wave crests
Trichromatic theory
There are three types of cones that detect three wave lengths of light (blue, green, red)
Negative afterimage
If you stare at a colored image and then stare at a white screen you then will see a colored afterimage
Opponent-process theory
Receptor cells are arranged in pairs (red/green) (black/white)
If one color is stimulated, the other is inhibited
