Particles In Chemistry Flashcards
Alloy
A mixture of metals which can be separated by melting the metals. The metals, all having different densities will separate out and form different layers once molten
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of that element
Boiling
The charge of state from liquid to gas
Brownian motion
The small, rapid movement of smoke particles in air or pollen particles in water- this is evidence of the random, invisible, motion of the smaller particles present in water and air
Compound
A substance containing atoms of two or more different elements, chemically combined, in a fixed ratio
Condensing
The change of state from gas to liquid
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Element
A substance made up of atoms that all have the same atomic number/number of protons
Evaporation
The process by which a liquid turns to a gas at a temperature below its boiling point
Freezing
The change of state from liquid to solid
Melting
The change of state from solid to liquid
Mixture
A substance containing atoms of two or more different substances (elements and/or compounds) not chemically combined, in a variable ratio
Molecule
The smallest particle of a substance that can have a separate, independent existence
Solidifying
The change of state from liquid to solid
Sublimation
The change of state from solid to gas or gas to solid
