Particle Theory Of Matter 01 Flashcards
What is matter?
Any material that occupies space and has mass
What is the Particle Theory Of Matter?
- All matter is made up of tiny particles
- Particles can attract each other
- Each pure substance has it’s own kind of particle, different from particles from other pure substance
- Particles are always moving
- Particles at a higher temperature move faster than particles at a lower temperature
What are properties?
Characteristics that are used to describe matter
What is a mixture?
A material that has more than one set of properties
What is heterogeneous?
Made up of parts or mixed
•A mixture is heterogeneous if it has parts that can be seen
What is homogeneous?
Every part of the material is the same
•Materials that have only one set of properties
Homogeneous & Heterogeneous can be used to describe solids, liquids & gasses
-
What is a mechanical mixture?
A mechanical mixture is when different parts in a mixture can be easily identified
What is a pure substance?
Always has the same properties
•A pure substance MUST be homogeneous
To find out what the material is, you must look at the properties!
-
- A scientific theory helps to explain an observation
- When this explanation has been repeatedly tested and shown to be consistent, it is generally accepted in the scientific world
-
What are controlled variables?
What the scientist wants to keep consistent (VERY IMPORTANT!!)
What are independent variables?
What is changed by the scientist.
A good experiment only has one independent variable (for our purposes)
What are dependent variables?
What the scientist focuses observation on. Observe and measure how the dependent variable responds to changes in the independent variable.
There can be more than one dependent variable in an experiment
