Ecosystems 01 Flashcards
What is biotic?
Living things (organism) in the environment
What is abiotic?
Non-living things in the environment
What is an organism?
Living thing
What is an ecosystem?
Interactions between abiotic and biotic features of an area and the biotic community that lives in the area
What is an individual?
One organism
What is a biological population?
Group of individuals of the same species
What are species?
A group of individuals who successfully reproduce among themselves
What is a biological community?
Made up of all populations in one area
What is a habitat?
A particular place where species lives
What is an interaction?
Interaction between community members
Sun
- Provides energy that gives warmth enabling organisms to survive
- Provides light for plants to make food
Air
- Contains oxygen that animals need to breath
- Provides carbon dioxide that plants use to make food
Water
- Crucial to all organisms for life processes
- Plants need water to grow
- Many organisms live in water
Soil
- Contains both biotic (decaying bodies of dead organisms) and abiotic (minerals)
- Provides minerals and other nutrients for plants
- Plants hold soil in place, helping to keep them from blowing or washing away
- Provides a home to many animals who live underground
Earthworm-Soil Interactions:
- Burrows in and overturns soil allowing air and water to go down in soil
- Eats organic material in soil and passes remains behind them, often on surface
- This brings valuable nutrients to topsoil
