Ecosystem 03 Flashcards
What is an energy flow?
The movement of energy, starting from the sun, and passing from one organism to the next
-At each step along the chain, energy is taken in by an organism
What is a food chain?
A model which shows how energy stored in food passes from one organism to organism
-Every food chain starts with a producer or plants
What are producers?
Producers are plants and algae that produce food for themselves and others
Producers are what starts a food chain, making life possible for all other organism on earth
What are consumers?
-All other organisms (that are not producers). Eat food made by the producers.
What are herbivores?
plant-eating animal
What are carnivores?
The next organism in the food chain. meat eaters
What are top carnivores?
The carnivore at the end of the food chain
What are omnivores?
an animal that eats other animals and plant material
What are scavengers?
Organisms that eats dead, decaying plant or animal matter
What are decomposers?
- Break down (do not eat) dea or waste material (such as rotting wood or manuare)
- Absorb some nutrient from the broken down material into their own cells
- Bacteria are micro-organisms
- Other decomposers, like fungi are large
Ecological Pyramid
- Includes the same organism as in a food chain
- As you go up the food pyramid, less and less good energy is available at each level
e. x.- each time a caterpillar eats a maple leaf, energy is lost as heat - Only a small amount of energy stores in the tissues of the caterpillar is passed on to a birds who eats it.
What is biomass?
Total of mass of all the organisms in an ecosystem
