Ecosystem 04 Flashcards
What is hydrosphere?
All the water on earth including lakes, oceans and rivers
What is biosphere?
Made up of three parts: lithosphere, atmosphere & hydrosphere
What is lithosphere?
Solid mineral material that covers earth, including the soil
What is atmosphere?
Blanket of air that covers Earth
What is a biosphere?
A giant ecosystem:
•All biotic and abiotic part of it are related: each affects the others
•The loss of one species has an effect on another
What is weather?
Local conditions that change from day to day, hour to hour
What is climate?
The average weather pattern of a region
What is a biome?
Large area with characteristic climate, soil, plants and animals
•Each type of biome can be found in a different part of the world
•Contains many different kinds of ecosystems
•Six major biomes on Earth (ice isn’t a biome)
What are the biomes in Canada?
Tundra
Temperate Forest
Boreal Forest
Grassland
What are the 6 major biomes?
Boreal Forest Temperate Forest Grassland Tundra Desert Tropical Rain Forest
What is succession?
•Can take hundreds, thousands of years
•Usually has positive effects
•Can have negative effects if happen too fast
e.x.- lake filling up and overflowing due to extra growth due to chemicals in water from human farming run-off into a stream
What is primary succession?
Is the gradual growth of organisms in an area that was previously bare, such as rock.
What is secondary succession?
Secondary succession is the gradual growth of organisms in a area that previously had a number of organisms
