Particle Theory Flashcards
What is Matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
What is Mass?
A measure of how much matter an object has.
What is Volume?
A measure of how much space an object takes up.
What is a Particle?
A basic unit of matter…
Eg. a particle of dust
Particle Theory
- All matter is made up of tiny particles known as atoms.
- Particles of matter are always in motion.
- Particles of matter attract each other.
- Particles of matter have spaces between them.
- As temperature increases, particles of matter move faster.
- Atoms of the same element are identical and atoms of different elements are different.
What are the 3 states of Matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
What is a solid?
particles are closely packed
molecules do not move, they just vibrate
they have a definite shape
What is a liquid?
particles are farther apart
particles move around
they take the shape of their container
What is a gas?
particles are the furthest apart
particles move very fast
they take the shape of their container
they can be compressed because the particles are so far apart
What happens to the states of matter when energy is added and removed?
Add Energy
- Solid to Liquid to Gas
Remove Energy
- Gas to Liquid to Solid
What are the changes of state?
Solid to Liquid = Melting
Liquid to Solid = Freezing
Liquid to Gas = Evaporation
Gas to Liquid = Condensation
Solid to Gas = Sublimation
Gas to Solid = Deposition
What happens to Temperature as states change?
Temperature does not increase when a state change happens.
What is the Melting Point?
Temperature when solid becomes liquid
What is Boiling Point?
Temperature when liquid becomes gas
What is Freezing Point?
Temperature when liquid becomes solid
