Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are the parts of an atom?
Nucleus
Neutrons (no charge)
Electrons (1-)
Electron shell
Protons (1+)
What are Protons, Neutrons and Electrons?
Proton stay in the nucleus of the atom. They have a charge of +1 and a mass of 1.
Neutrons stay in the nucleus of the atom. They have a charge of 0 and a mass of 1.
Electrons stay in the electron shells of the atom. They have a charge of -1 and a mass of 0.
How to calculate the protons, electrons and neutrons?
The number of neutrons
atomic number = number of protons
If the element is NEUTRAL, then the number of electrons is the same as the number of protons.
atomic mass - atomic #
How to calculate atomic mass?
Atomic Mass = # Protons + # Neutrons
Recall:
Protons have a mass of 1
Neutrons have a mass of 1
Electrons have a mass of 0
How to write Standard Atomic Notation?
How an element’s information is written when not in the periodic table
atomic mass (rounded) recorded in the top left
atomic number at the bottom left
** the bigger number is always the mass **
What are Isotopes?
Some elements have more than one TYPE of atom.
These are called ISOTOPES
Isotopes have the same number of protons (same element) but a different number of neutrons (different mass)
