particle model (C1.1) Flashcards
Matter
The term matter refers to anything that occupies space and has mass
particle
A tiny bit of matter
The particle model
Describes how particles are arranged and how they move in liquids, solids and gases.
Limitations of the particle model
- the forces between particles
- the size of the particles
- the space between particles
Rules
you cannot compress a substance in its solid state or its liquid state. This is because there is space for the particles to move into
A substance in its solid state has a fixed shape and cannot flow. This is because its particles are vibrate along fixed positions and cannot move from place to place.
Physical change
A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
chemical change
A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties.
What happens to particles during change
However, in chemical changes, particles break up and then join together in different ways.
Atoms
Building blocks of life.
