What are adjectives?
def. words that modify/change and describe nouns.
e.g.,
- The blue bear.
- The friendly bear.
- The red bear.
What are articles?
def. kinds of adjectives that helps you figure out how important or how specific something is.
e.g.,
- Definite(specific) - The elephant ate the grass.
- Indefinite(not specific) - An elephant ate a grass.
What are definite and indefinite articles?
def. definite are something you use to be specific; indefinite is something you use to be not specific.
e.g.,
- May I have the orange? definite
- May I have an orange? indefinite
Where to use a and an?
When the letter next to the indefinite pronoun is the right vowel sounds then you’ll use an
vice-versa for a = consonant _sounds_
e.g.,
- A box.
- An apple.
What are adverbs?
def. Modifies everything that is not a noun. Modifies adjective, verb, or other adverb.
“Adjectives” + “Ly”
e.g.,
- Adjective - Vanessa was very hungry.
- Verbs - Grayson ran slowly.
- Adverbs - Jenn is reading very quickly.
What are relative adverbs?
def. Questions words that modifies a verb, adjectives, and another adverb.
e.g., Where, when, why, and etc.
- This is the cave where I came from.
- I learned to breath fire when I was ten years old.
- I do not know why is that happening.
What is the adjective order?
def. the right order where you put adjectives. aka DOSASCOMP
abbreviation:
- Determiner - The/an
- Opinion - cool
- Size - big
- Age - old
- Shape - square
- Color - black
- Origin - Texan
- Material - leather
- Purpose - riding
- the thing - mower
e.g.,
- Old white American house.
How to determine whether to put a comma between two adjectives?
Comma & Adjectives
If they are in the same class of DOSASCOMP (coordinate adjectives), then you need to put a comma, vice-versa if not (DOSASCOMP)
e.g.,
- You sold me a mushy, sticky apple!
- You sold me a mushy green apple!
Define comparative and superlative adjectives.
Def. A way to compare same adjectives.
Comparative = more - less
Superlative = most - least
e.g.,
- Caesar is a happy penguin.
- Raul is happier than Caesar. (Comparative)
- Gabriela is the happiest penguin (Superlative)
What are the rules for forming comparative and superlative adjectives?
- 1 syllable & ends with a vowel = Add “r” or “est”
- 1 syllable & ends with a consonant = Add consonant and “er” or “est”
- 1 syllable with two vowels = Add “er” or “est”
- 2 syllables & ends in y = Change “y” to “i” and add “er” or “est”
- 3 or more syllables = add most or more before the word.
Define the concept of Intensifiers and adverbs of degree.
def. The extent of how much an intensifier intensifies a word.
Intensifier - Intensifies an adverb .
Adverbs of degree - The extent of the intensifier.
e.g.,
- The incredibly deadly viper.
- The somewhat deadly viper.
- The barely deadly viper.
