Part 7: Plants Flashcards
What is plant?
Multicellular organism, all photoautotrophs, contain chlorophyll, composed of cellulose
Two types of plants
Vascular Have water transport system Bring water up from the soil through the plant Non-Vascular ex. mosses Absorb water across their surface
What are their reproductive structures?
Both give off seeds, which separate into gymnosperms (cones) and angiosperms (seeds, reproductive structures)
What are types of angiosperms?
Monocots (one seed leave)
Dicots (two seed leaves)
What is the shoot system of angiosperms?
Stems, leaves, fruit, flowers, vascular tubes
What do root systems of angiosperms do?
Takes up water and mineral, also releases carbohydrates and other molecules
What are types of growth?
PRIMARY Indeterminate keeps growing as long as the plant lives Determinant growth certain plants will only grow a certain size, fruits seeds SECONDARY Lateral growth
What are the plant tissues?
Meristematic cells
Protective tissue
Ground tissue
Vascular tissue
What are meristematic tissues?
Self-replicating,
once finished dividing turn into other cells,
1. Apical meristem
contains melismatic tissue (tips of roots and shoots)
primary growth
2. lateral meristems
secondary growth (wider)
Types: 1, 2 vascular tissues (gives rise to secondary vascular tissues, involved in transport of fluids up/down)
3. Cork cambium
beneath epidermis
replaces epidermis with woody tissue
What is protective dermal tissue?
Epidermis, has waxes on the surface, on top of waxes - cutin
Cutin and waxes together - cuticle
prevents infection, desiccation
One layer thick
contains myoplast (responsible for storage of starch)
