part 7 Flashcards
What can PCA deliver?
continuous or on demand
When do PCAs require independent double checks?
- initiating
- changing rate
- changing container
What are some cardiovascular changes an older adult might encounter when using a PCA?
- decreased cardiac reserve
- increased risk of dysrhythmias
- postural hypotension
What are some pulmonary changes an older adult might encounter when using a PCA?
- decreased respiratory muscle strength
- decreased cough reflex
- decreased response to hypoxia, hypercapnia
What are some renal changes an older adult might encounter when using a PCA?
- decrease in kidney mass
- decreased drug clearance
- risk of fluid volume overload
- dehydration
Is a peripheral venous catheter and a midline peripheral catheter a central line?
- no, Not central lines
- but they are access devices
What type of line is a PICC?
central vascular access device
What is required before a PICC can be used?
radiographic verification
What are the 4 types of central lines?
PICC
non-tunneled percutaneous central venous catheters
tunneled central venous catheter
implanted port
What are some complications of IV therapy?
- infiltration- fluid leaks to other tissue
- extravasation- vesicant meds (drugs that cause tissue necrosis)
- phlebitis- inflammation of the vein
- thrombophelbitis- inflammation with clot
- infection
- fluid overload
- air embolism
- venous access device infection
