Diuretics part 3 Flashcards
What diuretics might a potassium sparing (aka spironolactone(Aldactone)) be given with and why?
thiazide or loop to counteract the K+ loss
What are the 2 sub categories of potassium sparing diuretics?
aldosterone antagonist
nonaldosterone antagonists
What is the prototype for potassium sparing diuretics?
spironolactone (Aldactone)
What is the mechanism of action of potassium sparing?
- retains potassium and excretes sodium
- happens in the distal nephron and by then not much diuresis is happening
- takes 1 to 2 days to show effects
What are the adverse effects of potassium sparing diuretics?
- hyperkalemia
- endocrine problems (it is a steroid derivative)
- benign and malignant tumors (given long term)
What are the therapeutic uses of K+ sparing diuretics?
- hypertension and edema
- heart failure
- women problems
Drug interaction:
What is spironolactone (Aldactone) often given with?
loop or thiazide diuretics
-to counteract the K+ wasting effects
What are the drug interactions for spironolactone (Aldactone)?
-watch when pt is taking K+ supplement, salt substitutes, or another K+ sparing diuretic
