part 6 Flashcards
What is important to remember in regards to the older adult and fluids?
- dehydration is a risk
- FVE is a risk (esp. post op because stress causes fluid retention)
- increased risk for acidosis (due to use of NaCl)
- accurate reporting of I/O is imperative (pt may not pee for 72 hours after surgery)
- assessments

- Disadvantages: potential for fluid overload, possible incompatibilities with meds , accidental bolus infusion
What are some advantages and disadvantages of intermittent IV infusion?
- Advantages: risk for overload decreased
- Disadvantages: drug concentration increased and can irritate vein, possible wasting of meds stuck in tubing
How often should IV site be assessed?
