Diuretics part 4 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the mechanism of action of the osmotic diuretic Mannitol?
A
- filtered by glomerulus
- minimal tubular reabsorption
- no effect on cells
- inhibits passive reabsorption of water
- more medication if more diuresis is desired
- no effect on K+ or other electrolytes
2
Q
What are the therapeutic uses of osmotic diuretic Mannitol?
A
- can prevent renal failure (by pulling water into the nephron)
- reduces intracranial pressure (draws fluid from brain into the blood)
- reduces intraocular pressure (draws ocular fluid into the blood)
3
Q
What are the adverse effects of the osmotic diuretic Mannitol?
A
-edema (can exacerbate CHF and pulmonary edema)
