part 4 Flashcards
1
Q
- Inhibits COX 1 and 2
- used to treat inflammatory disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis)
- alleviates mild to moderate pain
- suppresses fever
- relieves dysmenorrhea
- suppresses inflammation but pose risk of serious harm
A
First-Generation NSAIDs
2
Q
Nonselective inhibitor of cyclooxyrgenase
A
Aspirin (ASA)
3
Q
What are the therapeutic uses of Aspirin (ASA)?
A
analgesic antipyretic anti-inflammatory inhibits COX 2 suppresses platelet aggregation protects in thrombotic disorders (MI and stroke) dysmenorrhea (cramps) cancer prevention (colorectal) prevention of alzheimers disease
4
Q
What are the AE’s of aspirin?
A
- GI problems: heartburn and nausea
- bleeding
- renal impairment
- salicylism: tinnitus (ringing in the ears), sweating, headache, and dizziness
- Reye’s syndrome (swelling in the brain)
- hypersensitivity reaction
- dont use if pregnant
5
Q
What are the drug interactions of Aspirin?
A
- anticoagulants: warfarin and heparin
- glucocorticoids
- alcohol
- ibuprofen
- ace inhibits and ARBs
6
Q
What are the S/S of acute aspirin poisoning?
A
life threatening
- respiratory depression
- hyperthermia
- dehydration
- acidosis
- treatment is supportive
7
Q
What are non aspirin first gen NSAIDs?
A
- aspirin like with fewer GI, renal, and hemorrhagic effects
- 20+ non aspirin NSAIDs available (some patients do better on one than another)
- they inhibit COX 1 and 2 and inhibition is reversible (unlike aspirin)
8
Q
What are the principle indications for first gen non aspirin NSAIDs?
A
rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
9
Q
Do non aspirin NSAIds protect against MI and stroke?
A
NO
10
Q
What are the first generation non aspirin NSAIDs?
A
-Ibuprofen (advil and motrin)
