part 3 Flashcards
What are the uses of Cyclooxygenase (COX) Inhibitors?
suppress inflammation
relieve pain
reduce fever
What does the inhibition of COX-1 (good COX) cause?
Also the AE’s of Cyclooxygenase (COX) Inhibitors.
gastric ulceration
bleeding
renal impairment
What is the mechanism of action of Cyclooxygenase (COX) Inhibitors?
inhibits COX which is the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostanoids
What are the beneficial and harmful effects of inhibiting COX-1?
-Beneficial: protects against MI and stroke (due to reduced platelet aggregation) -Harmful: gastric erosion and ulceration bleeding tendencies renal impairment
What is th good COX and bad COX?
COX 1 = good
COX 2 = bad
What does the inhibition of COX 2 (bad) cause?
largely beneficial -Beneficial: suppression of inflammation alleviation of pain and reduction of fever protection against colorectal cancer -Harmful: renal impairment promotion of MI and stroke
What are the cyclooxygenase inhibitors with anti-inflammatory properties?
NSAID’s
What are the 4 NSAID’s?
Aspirin
Celecoxin
Ibuprofen
Naproxen
What cyclooxygenase inhibitors do not have anti-inflammatory properties?
acetaminophen
What medication works best for musculoskeletal pain?
NSAIDs
