hypocalcemia
pain syndromes: adult and chronic
trauma: localized skeletal muscle injury
muscle spasm
Where are effects produced for these drugs for spasm and spasticity?
effects are produced through actions in the CNS
-except dantrolene
What are some treatments for spasms?
- physical measures
- drug therapy
- analgesic anti-inflammatory (aspirin)
What are the physical measures in the treatment of spasm?
- immobilization of affected muscle
- cold compresses
- whirlpool baths
- physical therapy
- This medication is centrally acting (brainstem)
- reduces tonic motor activity
- most effective medication for its purpose
- may undergo significant enterohepatic recirculation
- caution use in liver impaired pt’s
Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril, Fexmid)
-ineffective for pt’s with spasticity
What are the AE’s of (Flexeril, Fexmid) Cyclobenzaprine and Carisoprodol (Soma)?

- Anticholinergic
- Cardiac
What medications are contraindicated with (Flexeril, Fexmid) Cyclobenzaprine and Carisoprodol (Soma)?
- antidepressants: MAOI’s
- alcohol and other CNS depressants
What do we need to warn older adults about (Flexeril, Fexmid) Cyclobenzaprine and Carisoprodol (Soma)?
- increased fall risk
- sedation and cognitive impairments
