what do you mean by excitable neurons
neurons are excitable cells because their membranes are in a polarized state
what do you mean by resting potential
when the axon is at rest the inside of the axon is negative( k+ ion) and the outside is positive(Na+). Resting potential of a membrane is -70mV
Depolarization
when the instruction has been reached opening of Na+ gate channels occur and influxation of Na+ takes place now the potential is 0 not -70mV. aka Action potential
repolarization
where A needs to back to its original position is known as repolarization
what happens during repolarization
now k+ gate channels open up. efflux if K+ take place
what is sodium-potassium pump
after repolarization has been achieved sodium-potassium pump works at its resting potential, where the oump gives out 3 Na+ and brings in 2 K+ ions.
