part 2 Flashcards
concept of neuroglial cells
a,k,a, glial cells. Specialized cells found in the brain and spinal cord supporting the neurons
glial cell: astrocyte
found in CNS. they provide mechanical support and repair of damaged areas
glial cell: microglial cell
found in CNS. engulf and destroy microbes and cell debris
how is microglial cell different from other cells
all the nervous system is made of ectoderm, except the microglial cells, they are mesodermal in origin
glial cells: oligodendrocytes
found in CNS. form myelin sheath around the axon
glial cells: Schwann cells
found in PNS. forms myelin sheath around the axon
myelinated neurons
enveloped with Schwann cells which form a myelin sheath around the axon . gaps between two adjacent myelin sheaths are called nodes of Ranvier
unmyelinated neurons
enveloped with Schwann cells that does not form a myelin sheath around the axon. the Schwann cell sheath is called Neurilemma
