Parotid and Temporal Regions, Infratemporal Fossa, and Temporomandibular Joint Flashcards
80% of salivary gland tumors occur in which gland?
parotid gland
what does infection of the parotid gland cause?
- parotiditis - inflammation
- severe pain b/c parotid sheath limits swelling
what does inflammation of the parotid duct cause?
redness of the parotid papilla in the superior oral vestibule
what does parotid gland disease cause?
pain in the auricle and external acoustic meatus, temporal region, and TMJ (due to auriculotemporal and great auricular nn.)
what is sialography?
radiopaque fluid injected into parotid duct through a cannula inserted through orifice of duct in the mucous membrane of cheek
what do parotid sialograms demonstrate?
parts of the parotid duct system that may be displaced or dilated by disease
what is a sialolith?
calcified deposit blocking the parotid duct
where might one have an accessory parotid gland?
on the masseter muscle b/w the parotid duct and the zygomatic arch w/ several ducts opening into parotid duct
mandibular nerve block
anesthetic injected near the mandibular nerve where it enters the infratemporal fossa - usually anesthetizes the auriculotemporal, inferior alveolar, lingual and buccal branches of V3
inferior alveolar nerve block
injected around mandibular foramen - numbs all mandibular teeth to the median plane
pterygoid trismus
numbness/paralysis of medial pterygoid muscles - affects ability to open mouth
why is posterior dislocation of the TMJ uncommon?
resisted by the postglenoid tubercle and the strong intrinsic lateral ligament
what nerves are at risk during surgery around the TMJ?
- auriculotemporal
- facial
what does injury to the articular branches of auriculotemporal that supply the TMJ cause?
laxity and instability of TMJ
what is crepitus?
joint clicking
