Parotid and Infratemporal regions Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the temporal fossa?
Superior temporal line - superior
Inferior - zygomatic arch
Contains the superficial temproal artery and auriculo-temporal nerve
Also contains the temporalis muscle
What are the boundaries of the infratemporal fossa?
Area inferior to the zygomatic arch
Superior - zygomatic arch
Lateral - mandible (ramus)
Medial - lateral pterygoid plate
Anterior - Posterior side of the maxillary bone
What foramina are located within the infratemporal fossa?
Foramen ovale
Foramen spinosum
Mandibular foramen
What passes through the pterygomaxillary fissure?
Maxillary artery and branches of V2 (maxillary division)
What can occur as a result of damage to the middle meningeal artery?
Epidural hematoma
Lens shaped
Can cause uncal and tonsillar herniation
What is the pterygoid venous plexus?
Venous plexus that receives drainage from the veins that accompany the maxillary artery branches
Anastomoses with veins that drain to cavernous sinus; important for spread of infection
What is the temporo-mandibular joint?
Synovial joint between the head of the mandible (condyle) and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone
Has a capsule that is tightly attached to the mandible
What ligaments are present at the TMJ?
Temporo-mandibular (lateral) ligament - prevents movement posteriorly and inferiorly
Sphenomandibular ligament - function unclear
Sylomandibular ligament - function unclear
What is the articular disc of the TMJ?
Cartilaginous disc that divides the joint into two compartments
Upper compartment - allows sliding movement, can lock
Lower compartment - hinge movement
What is Jaw lock?
Mandible stuck in partial depression because the disc is stuck on the articular tubercle
What movements of the jaw can be affected by trigeminal nerve damage?
Jaw deviates toward paralyzed side due to unopposed action of the lateral pterygoid muscle of the intact side
Describe the development of the parotid gland
Buds from the ectoderm of the primitive mouth
Extends to form cords - develops lumens that for ducts
The ducts join
Occurs at 7 weeks
What structures travel within the parotid gland?
CN VII
Retromandibular vein
External carotid artery
Auriculo temporal nerve
What is mumps?
Viral infection of the parotid; swelling painful due to tightness of the capsule
Referred pain to ear - compression of the auriculo temporal nerve
