Parliamentary influences Flashcards
Political influences advantages
each party has it’s proposals for reform ready meaning there will be no delay in passing bills
Political influences disadvantages
Could change the law which is expensive and smaller majority means this is harder so coalition govt is formed
Public opinion advantages
Public are able to criticise govt policy and raise issues they have which allows govt to amend the law when its fresh in the public’s mind (hillsbrough, 9/11, dunblane massacre)
Public opinion disadvantage
Government could have a knee jerk reaction to a case which wouldn’t be very well thought out which could lead to disputes in court
Pressure groups advantage
Raise issues of concern to large groups and make the govt aware of damage being done to environment (RSPCA hunting bill)
Pressure groups disadvantage
They are imposing their views when the public majority don’t support them and some don’t agree what they want (Hunting bill)
Lobbyists adv
Bring issues to MPs attention and present a way to make a case, leading to debates in parliament and publicity. Anyone can do it (WASPIS)
Lobbyists disadv
Unfair when professionals get involved as the more financially successful have the upper hand and more influence than the public
Media adv
Public use social media to react and express their views so the govt can see their opinions when it’s fresh in their minds
Media disadv
Public criticise govt decisions which means increased pressure when passing bills which could lead to knee jerk reactions and not thought through bills

They can overrule parents who don’t agree with their decisions, often about the life of their child (Charlie Gard, Tony bland, the twins)
