What is Parkinson’s Disease due to?
Due to lack of dopaminergic neurones in substantia nigra
What is the Parkinson’s Triad?
- Rigidity
- Bradykinesia
- Tremor
What are the 6 Ms of Parkinson’s?
- Monotonous
- Micrographia
- HypoMimesis
- March a petit pas (shuffling)
- Misery (depression)
- Memory loss
What is Drug-induced Parkinson’s?
Due to drugs that lower dopamine
What drugs lower dopamine?
Like antiemetics (metoclopramide) antipsychotics
How is Parkinson’s Disease Dementia diagnosed?
With an established diagnosis of Parkinson’s and then cognitive impairment.
What are the symptoms of PDD?
- Motor symptoms —-> Cognitive impairment
- Hallucinations (when on treatment)
- Delusions
- Daytime sleepiness
- Apathy
What is the difference with PDD and Lewy Body Dementia?
PDD: A longer period of time (4-5 years) between the onset of motor symptoms and cognitive dementia.
LBD: Develops within a year of motor symptom onset and can be diagnosed without motor symptoms.
