Define parity checking

A
  • Check if data has been lost or corrupted following transmission from one device to another
  • A byte of data is allocated as the parity bit
  • Parity bit is added together with the 1s bits
  • If different parity after transmission then error detected

Define ARQ

A
  • Check if data has been transmitted correctly
  • Uses acknowledgments (message sent by receiver indicating it has been received correctly)
  • Uses timeouts, if no response within certain time out, data is resent
