Define parity checking
A
- Check if data has been lost or corrupted following transmission from one device to another
- A byte of data is allocated as the parity bit
- Parity bit is added together with the 1s bits
- If different parity after transmission then error detected

A
Automatic Repeat Request

Define ARQ
A
- Check if data has been transmitted correctly
- Uses acknowledgments (message sent by receiver indicating it has been received correctly)
- Uses timeouts, if no response within certain time out, data is resent
