How do you initiate the procedure?
A
- gather equipment
- introduce self
- identify patient
- explain procedure and gain consent - I will be giving you some (name) medication through your cannula, is this okay?
- allergies?

What equipment is required?
A
- patient drug prescription chart
- tray
- sterile needles
- appropriate syringes
- 2x sodium chloride
- 1x sterile water
- medication (glucose)
- clinell swab
- gloves + apron
- sharps bin
- (cannula, in patient)

How do you prepare the drug and the flushes?
A
- check drug chart to establish drug, dose, time, date, route
- clean hands, gloves, apron
- check drug against chart, ensure its within expiry date
- check name, dose, expiry date of diluents
- draw up diluent with needle + syringe
- remove cap from drug vial, clean with appropriate swab
- inject diluent, release plunger with needle tip out of fluid
- mix - hold carefully
- inject air back into vial, invert, ensure needle in fluid and release plunger
- remove syringe, discard needle + drug bottle in sharps bin
- cap off syringe
- prepare two saline flushes

How do you administer a prepared drug?
A
- take prepared equipment etc to patient
- re-check identity of patient and the drug prescription chart
- wipe injectable bung with clinell wipe and allow to dry naturally
- flush cannula with saline (discomfort?)
- inject drug via cannula slowly, observe patient, ask them to notify you of discomfort or allergy
- flush cannula again with second saline flush

How do you finish the procedure?
A
- complete relevant details on patients drug chart
- check patients welfare - ask them to inform staff etc esp of any specific symptoms of anaphylaxis (SOB, wheeze, itch, tongue swell)
- remove apron and gloves
- thank patient
