How do you initiate the procedure?

A
  1. introduce self
  2. identify patient
  3. explain procedure - have you ever had a cannula before? it involves inserting a cannula into one of your veins so we can easily give you medicine and fluids, there will be a slight scratch when the cannula is inserted but it shouldnt be too painful
  4. explain complications - afterwards there may be some bleeding, swelling and theres a small risk of infection
  5. Do you have any questions? is it okay if we continue with this procedure?
  6. allergies? adverse drug reactions? (Everything finishes with a Q+A - Questions? Allergies/adverse drug reactions?)

What equipment is required?

A

non sterile gloves

  1. apron
  2. tray
  3. sharps bin
  4. sterile IV cannula
  5. sterile bung (remove cap)
  6. clinell wipe
  7. tourniquet
  8. transparent sterile dressing (tegederm)
  9. gauze
  10. cotton wool + tape
  11. appropriate syringe for flush
  12. sodium chloride for flush

How do you perform the procedure?

A
  1. identify suitable vein, clean site
  2. remove from packaging and make sure equipment is sound
  3. ensure patient ready, explain they might feel a slight scratch
  4. stretch skin below site, insert needle bevel upwards and in line with the vein at 45 degrees, advance needle until flashback
  5. lower the angle of the cannula, slightly withdraw needle and advance cannula into vein - secondary flashback
  6. insert cannula fully into vein
  7. release tourniquet
  8. place gauze under cannula to absorb blood
  9. elevate arm, apply proximal pressure on vein
  10. remove needle and discard immediately
  11. remove cannula cap and attach bung
  12. secure cannula with tegederm - remember to use sticky label and stick sideways, in line with cannula
  13. check name and expiry date on saline ampule, draw up using 5ml syringe, flush to ensure patency, ask to let patient know if they experience any pain during
  14. check for swelling/leakage around site
  15. document procedure in patients notes

How do you finish the procedure?

A
  1. request patient inform staff if they feel discomfort/pain/swelling around the site
  2. remove gloves and apron
  3. thank patient
