How do you initiate the procedure?
A
- introduce self
- identify patient
- explain procedure - have you ever had a cannula before? it involves inserting a cannula into one of your veins so we can easily give you medicine and fluids, there will be a slight scratch when the cannula is inserted but it shouldnt be too painful
- explain complications - afterwards there may be some bleeding, swelling and theres a small risk of infection
- Do you have any questions? is it okay if we continue with this procedure?
- allergies? adverse drug reactions? (Everything finishes with a Q+A - Questions? Allergies/adverse drug reactions?)

What equipment is required?
A
non sterile gloves
- apron
- tray
- sharps bin
- sterile IV cannula
- sterile bung (remove cap)
- clinell wipe
- tourniquet
- transparent sterile dressing (tegederm)
- gauze
- cotton wool + tape
- appropriate syringe for flush
- sodium chloride for flush

How do you perform the procedure?
A
- identify suitable vein, clean site
- remove from packaging and make sure equipment is sound
- ensure patient ready, explain they might feel a slight scratch
- stretch skin below site, insert needle bevel upwards and in line with the vein at 45 degrees, advance needle until flashback
- lower the angle of the cannula, slightly withdraw needle and advance cannula into vein - secondary flashback
- insert cannula fully into vein
- release tourniquet
- place gauze under cannula to absorb blood
- elevate arm, apply proximal pressure on vein
- remove needle and discard immediately
- remove cannula cap and attach bung
- secure cannula with tegederm - remember to use sticky label and stick sideways, in line with cannula
- check name and expiry date on saline ampule, draw up using 5ml syringe, flush to ensure patency, ask to let patient know if they experience any pain during
- check for swelling/leakage around site
- document procedure in patients notes

How do you finish the procedure?
A
- request patient inform staff if they feel discomfort/pain/swelling around the site
- remove gloves and apron
- thank patient
