Parathyroid glands Flashcards
Small, round masses of tissue embedded into the posterior surface of loves are called the
Parathyroid glands
Name the 2 kinds of epithelial cells found on the parathyroid
- Chief cells(dense, principal)secretes PTH (parathyroid hormone)
- Oxyphil cells- function not known, in cancer, secretes excess PTH
What does PTH regulate?
- calcium, magnesium, and phosphate
Specific action of PTH
Increase number and activity of osteoclasts
Result of PTH
Elevated bone resorption
What does PTH do on kidneys?
- Slows rate of magnesium and calcium are lost from blood into urine
2.decreaes blood HPO24 - Promotes function of calcitriol
Calcitriol is the active form of
Vitamin D
Drop in calcium levels
1) Parathyroid glands—>PTH
2) Osteoclasts release calcium from bone
3) calcium reassured from urine by kidneys
4) calcium absorption in small intestine via vitamin D synthesis
5) calcium levels increase
What does the parathyroid glands work with to regulate calcium homeostasis?
Calcitriol and PTH
Increase on calcium levels
- Thyroid gland releases calcitonin
- Osteoclast activity is prohibited
- Ca2+ reabsorption in the kidneys decreases
4.Ca2+ levels in blood decreases
