Parathyroid Function Flashcards
what three organs does PTH have effect on?
Bone
Kidney
Gut
what is the direct effect of PTH on bone calcium?
stimulates osteoclasts to increase bone resorption and increase calcium release
what is the direct effect of PTH on kidney calcium?
increase tubular Ca reabsorption and increase vitamin D activation
what is the indirect effect of PTH on gut calcium?
due to vitamin D activation from kidney the gut starts to absorb more calcium
what is the direct effect of PTH on bone phosphorus?
increase bone resorption and increase phosphorus release
what is the direct effect of PTH on kidney phosphorus?
increas phosphorus excretion, increase Vit D activation
what is the direct effect of PTH on gut phosphorus?
increase phosphorus absorption via vit D activation
what is overall effect of PTH on levels of phosphorus?
decrease levels
what is overall effect of PTH on levels of calcium?
increase
how does calcium regulate PTH release?
if calcium high then PTH down…negative feedback
how does phosphorus regulate PTH?
positive feedback, if Phosphorus high then turns up PTH
where is the majority of bodily calcium stored?
skeleton
what percent of body calcium is in ECF ?
0.2%
what three ways does calcium exist in ECF?
protein bound
ionized (free)
complexed with PO4 etc
what protein often binds calcium?
albumin
