Parasitology 4 Flashcards
Should you worry about giardia if you have no diarrhea?
NO
What should you use to treat ancylostoma canium?
Pancur/fenbendazole, pyrantel, febantel, moxidectin
When should you follow up with a FECRT? Why?
12 days (based on how long it would take for resistant ones to being to produce and before larval leak)
How is Anyclostoma canium tansmitted?
Fecal Oral
Mammary
Skin
Where are the targe organs for anycylostoma canium?
Small Intestines
Cough up to go to lung and heart
Dormant in muscle
What is larval leak?
When the dormant larvae in muscle is not killed by routine treatment so it comes out to replace others (muscle to SI)
What is the PPP of ancylostoma Canium?
3 weeks (produce eggs then)
Is anthelminitic resistance a problem in dogs?
Yes but to confirm it you must use the right drug, route and dose, do a fecal reduction count test.
-Rule out larval leak
What is one explanation for some of the anthelmintic resistance?
Grey hounds with intense deworming moving across the US due to racing being banned in Florida
What are the 3 ways to evaluate anthelmintic resistance?
FECRT, In vitro drug bioassays, Molecular Testing
Explain the following:
<75% Reduction:
75-89% Reduction
90-95% Reduction
>95% Reduction
<75% Reduction: Resistance
75-89% Reduction: Resistance
90-95% Reduction: Reduced Efficacy - inconclusive
>95% Reduction: Effective Treatment
How do you determine a definitive diagnosis?
Patient treated proper dose, within expiration date, stored correctly and FECRT performed
What are some drug combos that help with resistance?
Febantel, pyrantel with praziquantel and moxidectin
