Parasitology 2 Flashcards
What is a sediment test used for?
Parasites with high density that wont float readily (fluke and other unusual parasites)
How do you perform a sediment test?
Mix feces with water, allow it to settle, fluid poured off leaving sediment, repeat
What is the Baermann test?
Easy, used for infections where larvae are the diagnostic stage - need a fresh sample with live larvae, allow it to sit 8-24hr at room temp and larvae migrate into water
Is one negative baermann test a definitive negative?
NO
So you see larvae in the baremann test.. now what?
Kill them with Lugol’s iodine or heat (visualize)
If you perform the baermanns test and see nematodes of the same size with tail with kink and spine what are they most likely?
Aelurostrongylus (Lung worm)
What if you perform baermanns test and the parasites are roughly the same size, but have a plain tail?
Free living nematode or hatched hookworm
What is the bulb?
Muscle at end of esophagus that pumps to move food though the intestines
If you find larva with a kink tail in dogs on a baermann test then you should suspect…
Spurious parasite - aelurostongylus eating cat poo, mulleris eating small ruminant or camelid poop, or deer poop
Only K9 would be angiostronglus
Can you detect parasites in urine?
Yes, with sedimentation you can recover eggs passed in urine (free catch may be contaminated)
What stain should be used to investigate parasites on blood smear?
Wrights or Giemsa
What parasites can you see on blood smear?
Hemoprotozoa, intracellular and extracellular (Babesia, theileria, cytauxzoon and trypanosoma)
When does taking a bloodsmear work best?
Acute infection
What can you see on a direct unstained blood smear?
Microflora or nonpathogenic
What is a good way to get a concentrated blood exam?
Knott Test
