Parasitism Flashcards
Mutualism
two species benefit form interacting together
what is an example of mutualism?
ex. plant pollinatiors = plant reproduces, animal gets nutrients
parasitism
one species benefits by exploiting host/ another species, harmed but not killed
how does mutualism evolve to parasitism?
depends upon enviornment
ex. some plants mimic the look of wasps and then wasps try to mate with the plant rather than their mates
how does parasitim evolve to mutualism?
Parasitism traits
- not USUALLY trying to kill the host
- not directly consuming hosts whole body for engery
- host may die form secondary infection
MICROparasites
- small size
- short lifespan
-cause diseases
MACROparasites
- large size
- longer lifespan
ectoparasite
attach to outside of body
endoparasite
live inside the body
what are traits of endoparasites?
have more than one host
primary or definitive host
host in which parasite sexually reproduces
secondary or intermediate host
host in which parasite is in egg or larval stage
- secondary host eats food or drink that is contaminated
- larva live in animal’s muscle
- human primary host eats raw meat
- larva becomes adult and reproduces in the human
human tapeworm life cycle
parasitoids
attack host and paralyze it
