Parasitic worms (helminths) Flashcards
How do we get infected with geohelminths (soil transmitted nematodes)
ingestion of eggs with infective larvae
- ascaris and whipworms
Infective larvae penetrate skin
- hookworms and strongyloides
Rectal prolapse
whipworm (trichuriasis)
All of these live in Small intestine except for which one?
- Ascariasis
- Trichuriasis
- Hookworm
- Strongyloids
Trichuriasis
(whipworm)
- large intestine (embed)
Autoinfection
strongyloidiasis
- burrow in small intestine mucosa
Pinworm
- F-O travel to perianal area at night
Pin worm diagnosis
scotch tape
Filariasis (wuchereria bancrofti)
- transmission
Female mosquito
Onchocerciasis
- transmission
Female blackfly bite
How does onchocerciasis cause blindness?
Takes 1 year for them to produce larvae.
Its the larvae that crosses your eyes that causes blindness.
Trichinosis
- sx
- almost all cases are caused by what?
fever, vomiting, nausea, periorbital edema, myalgia
(cysts form in striated muscle)
- Eating wild meat, jerky, homemade sausage
When shistosomiasis infects and eggs get layed,
- where do they get caught?
- What do you see with immune response?
Eggs get caught in intestines, bladder, liver
- tissue damage –> eggs get out on feces or urine
Immune response is cellular infiltration leading to granulomas
Cysticercosis
- transmission?
eating food or drinking water that has tapeworm eggs in it (pork tapeworm)
Where can cysticercosis cyst be found?
muscle, skin, eyes, brain
