Parasites and Mutualism Flashcards
Symbiosis
protracted associations of two different species
Parasitism
a symbiosis where one species is negatively affected(holoparasite-lacks ability to photosynthesize) (hemi-parasite-photosynthetic, but still parasitizes)
Microparasites
not visible with the naked eye
Macroparasites
can be seen with the naked eye
Ectoparasite
ecto-outside the host
Endoparasite
endo-occur inside host
direct transmission
parasite moves from one host to another
indirect transmission
parasite moves through intermediate host to get to definitive host where reproduction occurs
definitive hosts
may be unaffected, negatively affected
intermediate hosts
parasites will reduce they’re survival(make them more susceptible to predation by final host)
dilution effect
the more individuals in your group the less of a chance there is of being eaten because the predator eats someone else
commensalism
one species benefits, the other is unaffected
mutualism
a positive reciprocal relationship between two species that may have evolved from predator-prey ot host-parasite relationships
endo-symbiont
an organism having a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship with a host organism while living in the host’s body
ecto-symbiont
a partner in a symbiotic relationship that remains on the surface of its host or occupies a body cavity
