Paramyxoviridae Flashcards
Paramyxoviridae
- _ subfamilies, _ genera
- morphology? envelope?
- ______ sense RNA genome
- ______ symmetry of nucleocapsid
- ______ replication
- What type of inclusion bodies?
Paramyxoviridae
- 2 subfamilies, 7 genera
- Pleomorphic, enveloped
- Negative sense RNA genome
- Helical symmetry of nucleocapsid
- Cytoplasmic replication
- Intracytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusion bodies i.e. distemper
What virus family are these diseases associated with?
Respirovirus, rubulavirus, avulavirus, morbillivirus, CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS, NEWCASTLE DISEASE VIRUS, Pneumovirus (BRSV), Henipavirus
Paramyxoviridae
CANINE DISTEMPER
Host range?
Transmission?
Young dogs are MORE/LESS susceptible. Urban dogs have MORE/LESS frequent infections but MORE/LESS catastrophic compared to rural dogs with MORE/LESS frequent infections that are MORE/LESS catastrophic.
CANINE DISTEMPER
Host range? Canidae, Procyonidae (raccoon, panda etc.), Mustelidae (mink, skunk, otter, etc.)
Transmission? All secretions, excretions, direct contact, droplet infection
Young dogs are MORE susceptible. Urban dogs have MORE frequent infections but LESS catastrophic compared to rural dogs with LESS frequent infections that are MORE catastrophic.
All of the following are symptoms and lesions associated with Canine Distemper except:
a) Biphasic febrile response
b) anorexia, conjuctivitis, nasal discharge
c) bronchitis, tonsillitis, cough, bronchopneumonia
d) left sided heart failure
e) vomiting, diarrhea
d) left sided heart failure
What is the fatal result of continued Canine Distemper virus replication after 10-30 days?
Acute encephalomyelitis
Are there late complications associated with Canine Distemper infection?
Yes, late demyelinating encephalomyelitis (1-2 mos post) and old dog encephalitis (rare, fatal, 24 mos onwards)
What is the vaccination schedule for Canine Distemper virus?
Live virus vaccine-8, 12 and 16 weeks
- Wide-spread in cattle
- most have antibodies-subclinical infections
- stress-predisposes to shipping fever
- epithelial necrosis, syncytia
- decreased ciliary activity
- interstitial pneumonia results in some cases
Name the virus and family.
Parainfluenza-3 (PI-3)
Paramyxoviridae
BRSV=
- mostly mild, subclinical disease
- ACUTE/CHRONIC UPPER/LOWER respiratory infections
- syncytia, INTRA/INTERcytoplasmic inclusions
BRSV= Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus
- mostly mild, subclinical disease
- ACUTE LOWER respiratory infections
- syncytia, INTRAcytoplasmic inclusions
